Steve Davis and the team at Performance Distributors are well-known throughout the performance industry; their Davis Unified Ignition allows owners of older vehicles to incorporate an all-in-one ignition and distributor solution into their performance vehicle.

In this episode of Motorhead Garage, hosts Sam Memmolo and Dave Bowman take a trip to the Performance Distributors facility, where they learn about the company’s product line. The Racing D.U.I. system has a 50,000-volt coil, and Davis has it on a test bench to show off its capabilities. On the bench, he makes use of a gigantic 3/8-inch gap to test whether the coil and distributor can fire across that large of an area – and it does so, without a single issue, all the way up to 10,000RPM. 

The all-in-one solution includes a custom advance curve, a custom DynaMod module, and the built-in coil, which sits atop the distributor cap and simplifies the entire process of vehicle ignition. Davis and Memmolo discuss some of the advantages of the system, such as better throttle response, detonation prevention, and better fuel economy.

Discussion of distributor curving is also on tap. One of the advantages to using these Davis units is that it can be custom-curved to your application prior to ever leaving their shop – lumpy camshafts, big cylinder heads and thirsty carburetors can all be accounted for in the distributor tuneup to provide you with the best results upon receipt.
