Gary Busey may be doing car dealer commercials today, but in 1976, he starred in “The Gumball Rally” a film directed and co-written by Chuck Bail about a coast to coast race across the US. Inspired by Car and Driver scribe Brock Yates’s “Cannonball Run,” it spawned two other car flicks of the same name. In this clip from Pro-Touring.com, check out a mean sounding 2nd Gen Camaro being wrung out on a twisty country road.
Although, Busey’s character is faced with the tricky predicament of relieving himself in a bottle as the Camaro power slides through corner after corner, the real star here is what might be the first Pro-Touring Camaro at speed.
According to NastyZ28.com, this is a ’70 1/2 Â Z/28 running an LT1 V-8. Modifications include a ditched front bumper, big block Vette stinger hood scoop, and rally lights. Although the soundtrack would suggest that it was a four-speed car, sharp eyed viewers can see that this car was equipped with a TH350. Aside from the obvious addition of custom wheels, little documentation exists regarding modifications to engine and suspension.
Hollywood folklore has it that the Camaro’s engine blew up during the production and the producers rented another Camaro and swapped its engine into the movie car and continued filming. The whereabouts of the car is unknown today, but this Camaro lives on in blazing glory every time you push play on this clip.
