When it comes to machining an engine, every minute change can make a difference. This week on The Build, a minute change is exactly what they’re working on, as Rick Drewry continues his visit to Smyth Automotive. Check out this week’s episode of The Build above.
Now that the 1965 Malibu SS’s Chevy big block has been baked, magnifluxed and checked over for the umpteenth time, it’s time to move on to more of the nitty gritty details. That’s why this week, the classic engine is being machined once again, this time along the guides for the cylinder heads.
Wanting to make an improvement on the factory engine, the crew of The Build will be putting new, heftier valve seals on. To make sure they seat correctly, a bit more machining work is required.
With the guides properly measured and leveled out, Smyth Automotive machines the area so that the new valve seals fit snuggly in place. This not only will help seal off the area better from oil, it will help prevent the Malibu from exhausting that annoying and embarrassing cloud of smoke upon start-up.
The 1965 Malibu SS project is well on its way to greatness and thanks to Smyth Automotive, the crew of The Build is making progress to an even greater classic engine. Be sure to check back next week as the crew of The Build takes on more work at the machine shop. Â
