Last week, our friends over at American Modern Insurance Group completely disconnected their 1965 Malibu’s body from its bent frame, replacing the bent-up structure with a boxed convertible frame from a 1965 GTO. Although the frame fell a bit long in the end, the Malibu project car is well on its way to being revived into a driveable classic Chevy. Check out what this week’s task is for the crew in the video above.

Because of the collision with a brick wall, the Malibu SS sustained quite a bit of front end damage that went right through to the engine, firewall and transmission. Luckily, the damage wasn’t bad enough that the car needed to be junked and the crew of The Build has been working tirelessly to save every component on the classic Chevy as they can.

With the body now relieved of its bent frame, it’s time to address the damage to the firewall. Unfortunately, a rough pull with the frame puller just didn’t quite cut it for the kinked metal. But, there is a solution to this issue!

Not much was left of the ‘65 GTO donor car after it went through a fire, but one of the pieces that Claims Specialist Rick Drewry was able to pull off of the car was the exact piece that’s incredibly kinked on the Malibu’s firewall. And with GM A-bodies sharing so many body components back in the day, the Malibu’s firewall will be able to be fixed with a patch from the GTO and a bit of welding.

When you’re tearing into a car, you don’t always know what you’re going to get.

Half the time the results aren’t bad, but it’s when you run into difficulties that your creative mind and automotive knowledge will come in handy.

Now that the crew of The Build has found a solution to their firewall issue, the Malibu is ready for the next step of its total overhaul.
