One of the most popular trends in hot-rodding today is the LS swap into a ’69 Camaro. The combination of classic style and modern performance is a hard one to beat – even purists have to admit that these swaps have soared in popularity.Â
To us, it will never get stale, and our friends over at V8 TV have been documenting such a build in the form of the “Lou’s Change” ’69 Camaro – this one in particular, is packing the factory-supercharged LSA out of a new CTS-V. But you can’t put one of these late-model powerhouses in a classic car like this without bringing the transmission up to modern standards, too.
Tremec, one of the leaders in the high-performance transmission industry, has stepped up to the plate with their heavy-duty T-56 Magnum manual 6-speed gearbox, a perfect match for the power and torque of the LSA.
In case you didn’t know, the T-56 Magnum is the transmission Chevrolet relies on in their 2013 Corvette ZR1 (which, appropriately enough, is powered by the LSA’s close relative the LS9) and it’s able to withstand 700 lb-ft. of torque effectively. So if it can handle a 638 HP monster like the ZR1, it’s perfect for this Camaro.
The T-56 Magnum comes complete as the Modern Driveline Kit, and it comes with the transmission, flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, shifter, electronic connections, fluid, hydraulic master cylinder and release bearing.Â
V8 TV host Kevin Oeste goes into detail about this pro-touring Camaro that will be equipped with a Currie 9-inch rear axle, and custom, one-off Forgeline wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888’s.
Detroit Speed & Engineering contributed a a hydraulic master clutch cylinder bracket to help install the custom transmission crossmember. The Camaro isn’t finished yet, at least not in these videos. But we do look forward to how the finished product will turn out. It it looks anything like the rendering above, we’ll be impressed, regardless.
