Lest you forget, there were LS-powered Camaros before the 5th-gens made their debut for the 2010 model year. And those 1998-02 models have their own following for those who prefer the 4th-gen hatchback bodystyle compared to the 5th- and 6th- gen models.

Backing up a bit, the 4th-gen cars came out in 1993 and it was also the first year for the Gen-2 LT1 engine that had been previously released in the 1992 Corvette.

The same thing happened in 1997, when the Corvette was the first GM car to get the new Gen-3 LS1 engine and the 1998 Camaro got the LS1 the following year. All Z28 and SS models (as well as the police-package B4C Camaro) were so-equipped through the end of production in 2002.

So what’s the point of this little history lesson from almost 15 years ago? Mainly, it’s to shed a little light on the 4th-gen LS1-powered Camaros (and Pontiac Firebirds) that preceded the newer cars that have now been on the scene for a full seven years.

And further, it’s to provide some background on this eBay gem that we discovered when we decided to see if there were any clean low-mileage LS1-powered ’98-’02s out there.

While there were two or three low-mileage examples listed, this one in particular was a standout. Two big reasons for that is because it’s equipped with a six-speed manual trans and has a cloth interior. But the really big draw for this 2001 SS is its like-new condition. With less than 3,000 miles on it, it’s a creampuff to be sure and if you’re looking for a minty-fresh 4th-gen, you are not going to find a better example.

To paraphrase the sellers words, he says, “With only 2,984 miles on it, this is a rare chance to own a near-new 2001 Camaro SS. It has a rare six-speed manual with a Hurst short-throw shifter and T-tops. It has its original 17-inch chrome wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 275/40ZR17 tires, and is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Always garaged and currently in storage, all documents are in hand including the original window sticker. Other features include power seats, locks, and windows. It’s equipped with the 325-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 with cold-air induction, and low-restriction exhaust. It also has the SS suspension package with unique springs and shocks. This is a pristine example of an authentic four-generation Camaro SS.”

While the 5th- and all-new 6th-gen Camaros are clearly technological marvels, we still have a big soft spot for these 4th-gen cars that kept the Camaro (and Firebird) flame alive for a full 10 years. And while about 20 grand might seem like a lot of money, keep in mind this is pretty much a brand-new car. We love it and if we had the scratch, we’d take it.
