Scott Ross turned a lifelong dream into a career filled with stories about cool rides, great events, and the people who made it all happen. Growing up near Detroit in the late ‘60s, Scott’s neighbors included Dave Holls, then head of one of Chevrolet’s advanced-styling studios and later a GM Design director, Richard Baird, who had been head of DeSoto’s Exterior Styling Studio under Virgil Exner, and was later a Chrysler styling executive, and Gerry Thorley, who headed up Plymouth’s Exterior Styling studio while his sons were grade-school classmates of Scott and his brother. He kept his interest in American high-performance cars while working in radio news around the Midwest, before joining his father’s technical consulting company in Minnesota in 1986. A member of both the Minnesota Street Rod Association (MSRA) and Minnesota Street Machine Association (MSMA), Scott helped lobby state lawmakers on behalf of a bill to allow non-ethanol-blended gasolines, which became law in Minnesota in 1996. During that time, he began freelancing for DRIVE! magazine, and in 1998, became its first full-time editor. Eventually, he became the senior editor, and wrote a monthly “Steering Column” as well as event coverage, car features, and personality profiles. Opportunity knocked in 2007 at Primedia’s (later Source Interlink Media’s) office in Tampa, Florida — a gearhead’s dream, complete with a fully-equipped shop with a chassis dyno. It was there that Scott met up with Randy Bolig, for who he wrote car features, cover stories, and historic articles from 2007 through 2014.
