The vacation destination for classic car lovers? Southern California? One of the huge classic car runs in the deep south such as Cruisin’ The Coast that goes down in the Biloxi, Mississippi area? Detroit, Michigan’s cruise nights? That’s been done. It’s Cuba, man.
Believe it or not, the new, hip destination for classic car lovers is, of all crazy places, Cuba. Yes, that forbidden island just off the tip of Florida that for decades was illegal for U.S. citizens to visit. The truth is that since the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy got pissed off at Fidel Castro and signed the embargo to keep American goods and people from gaining entry into Cuba way back in 1961, the island and its cars stayed stuck in the 50’s.The people of Cuba had nothing else but the American automobiles they were left with and they had to do their very best to preserve what they had. And do their best they did. There are 50’s vintage Chevys, as well as other makes of classic cars, still rolling around on every street, used for personal transportation and as taxis.
It can be a paradise of sorts for classic car lovers.
