If you’ve got to drive through the streets of New York, is there any better way than behind the wheel of a drop-top Chevelle SS? Well, Big Muscle’s got you covered this week if that sounds like your kind of Queens ride. Check out the gorgeous bright blue classic in the video from DRIVE above.
Mike Musto is in Queens, New York this week for a two-part Big Muscle episode looking at a couple cars from where he used to live, one of which is a ‘66 Chevelle SS convertible owned by George Triantafillou. But this big brute of a car isn’t just a beauty, it’s also packing some extra punch with a 550ci big-block, Dart heads, TKO600 5-speed transmission and 3.55 rearend gears.
With QA1 adjustable shocks and Hotchkiss suspension components up front, the car seems to handle nicely and give that smooth ride perfect for cruising the town with. Manual Baer brakes, however, remind you that you are still driving a car nearly half a century old.
American Racing wheels wrapped in P275-series Toyo rubber allow the car to hug the road in true style, but not too tightly. With enough torque to throw one back in their seat a bit, Musto admits that the back end of the Chevy can get very loose.
While it may not be a bona fide race car, Triantafillou’s Chevelle is quite the lust-worthy ride. Perfect cruiser with a bit of a bad side? Sounds like the perfect combination to us.
